The Florida Keys is an outdoor paradise, host to one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Mangrove island and seagrass 
habitats thrive in the tropical waters here. North America's only living coral barrier reef is but six miles offshore, stretching the length of the Florida Keys from North Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas. Today, Keys outdoor life consists of scuba and snuba diving, kayaking and canoeing, parasailing, kite surfing, lobstering and deep sea and backcountry fishing. Until 1840 though, Key West was a wealthy island flourishing on the spoils of shipwrecked vessels. Salvage or wrecking made locals rich by fair means or foul. Despite being a legal activity, the line between slavaging and actualy privateering was blurred. Life on the water meant postwrecking, shipbuilding and sponging.
One of the biggest collections of shipwrecked treasure is at the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society Museum, where the late Mel Fisher himself discovered and salvaged the jewelry, gold, silver and gems from the 17th-century Spanish galleons, Nuestra Senora de Atocha and Santa Margarita. The find was valued at more than $400 million. Also in town at the Pirate Soul Museum is one of two remaining Jolly Rogers flags, left from the days of Blackbeard and Caribbean pirates.
